Babesiosis Treatment Starts with the Right Diagnosis
Babesiosis treatment typically begins after a thorough evaluation and confirmed diagnosis. This tick-borne illness is diagnosed based on symptoms, medical history, and specialized laboratory testing. Because its symptoms — such as fatigue, fever, chills, and body aches — are nonspecific and often overlap with other illnesses, accurate diagnosis can be challenging.
Anaplasmosis: A Common Lyme co-infection
Since ticks can carry multiple pathogens, a single bite can transmit not only Lyme disease but other infectious agents, like Anaplasma, Babesia or Bartonella. According to the CDC, between 5 – 10% of patients with Lyme may also be co-infected with Anaplasma. In some high-risk regions such as Wisconsin, studies have found that up to 20% of Lyme disease patients also test positive for anaplasmosis.
Babesiosis Cases exploding across the U.S
Babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by an infection with Babesia, a malaria-like parasite, also called a “piroplasm,” that infects red blood cells. In healthy individuals, the illness can be mild or even asymptomatic. However, babesiosis can become severe or life-threatening in people with weakened immune systems, the elderly, or those without a spleen.
Rickettsia
Rickettsia infections are illnesses caused by tiny bacteria called rickettsia. Rickettsia symptoms can range from mild to severe. In the United States, Rocky Mountain spotted fever is the most common rickettsial infection. Although these infections can also be acquired through fleas, lice or mites, rickettsia is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected tick.
Mast cell syndrome – when our immune system overreacts
Mast cell syndrome ─ also referred to as mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) ─ is a type of mast cell disease, which occurs when the cells are overactive in your body. Everyone has mast cells, a type of white blood cell that helps the immune system respond to outside stressors or threats, such as infections, allergens and injuries.
Why Bartonella Treatment Is So Complex
Bartonella treatment and diagnosis can be complex because the bacteria are hard to detect and difficult to eliminate. They hide inside red blood cells and blood-vessel walls, often causing vague or overlapping symptoms that mimic other infections. Accurate diagnosis requires specialized testing, and Bartonella treatment typically involves targeted antibiotics and careful medical monitoring to ensure full recovery.
Bartonella – An Overlooked Co-infection
Bartonella is a type of bacteria that can infect both humans and animals, leading to a group of illnesses known as bartonellosis. The bacterium can live inside red blood cells and the lining of blood vessels, allowing it to evade the immune system and making the infection difficult to fully eliminate. This may explain why some patients struggle with chronic Bartonella symptoms or relapse, even after treatment.

While bartonellosis was once considered to be a mild, short-lived illness, medical professionals now recognize that Bartonella can cause a wide range of health problems. The infection can affect many parts of the body. While some people may not show any signs of infection, others can experience chronic, relapsing symptoms that persist or return over time.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a serious tick-borne illness caused by the Rickettsia rickettsii bacterium. It was first identified in the early 1900s in the Rocky Mountain region, but has since been reported across much of the United States, particularly in the Southeast and South-Central region.
